WHY IS YOGA SO GOOD FOR PREGNANCY AND BIRTH?
Yoga is proven to be a safe and effective exercise during pregnancy. Not only does it have a multifaceted effect on the pregnant mother’s body, including developing strength, maintaining fitness and reducing symptoms of pregnancy such as muscle aches, swelling, sciatica, cramps, and fatigue but it also has a demonstrated effect on her mind and her baby.
"Regular yoga practice in the last 10–12 weeks of pregnancy improves maternal comfort in labor and may facilitate labor progress. The researchers offer several theories for these effects. First, yoga involves synchronization of breathing awareness and muscle relaxation, which decrease tension and the perception of pain. Second, yoga movements, breathing, and chanting may increase circulating endorphins and serotonin, “raising the threshold of mind-body relationship to pain” (p. 112). Third, practicing yoga postures over time alters pain pathways through the parasympathetic nervous system, decreasing one’s need to actively respond to unpleasant physical sensations." She will also discuss birthing in general, particularly the aspect of building confidence and overcoming fear.
"There is nothing as powerful as a group of women coming together to support one another and in the primal journey of birthing our babies we can support one another in so many ways. This time together should not be underestimated in it’s power for us to ‘hold a space’ in our minds and hearts for birthing. I’m so looking forward to spending this precious time with you all." - Katie Manitsas
1:30pm-2pm QnA with Katie. In her work a doula (a a woman experienced in childbirth who provides advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth) Katie has attended many births over the years. Come with all questions about labour, birth and the post-partum recovery period (none too strange, too big or too small)!
Benefits of Yoga In Pregnancy:
“The practice of yoga has many positive effects on pregnant women. Yoga is a multifaceted approach to exercise that encompasses physical stretching, mental centering and breath awareness, making it an ideal preparation for labor and childbirth. Yoga encourages relaxation, internal focus and slowed breathing patterns, goals that are common in many types of childbirth preparation classes. Yoga may help relieve many of the common discomforts of pregnancy, such as lower back pain, nausea, insomnia, carpal tunnel syndrome and headaches. In addition, prenatal yoga classes often offer a supportive environment in which pregnant women can share their experiences, which may help relieve feelings of anxiety or depression.”

Praise for Kate Alexandra
"Kate is an excellent yoga teacher who accommodates individual needs and has a great sense of humour about it, like when my body won't bend as much as required. She has great technical expertise as well as theoretical knowledge about yoga." - Dale Lowe
"(I love) the small and intimate size of your classes. I felt so connected to everyone in the room, and it didn't feel like a factory yoga class. It felt special. Like I was giving myself a beautiful gift." - Rachel Gross
"It is an absolute honour knowing the beautiful, soulful Kate Alexandra. She is an inspiring, free spirited woman whom I am so grateful to call both a friend and a colleague. She is such an inspiration to me and I couldn't be more proud to see how far she has come in such a short amount of time. I would highly recommend her classes and workshops to all." Aimee Angelique, Yoga Teacher + Holistic Health and Lifestyle Coach.
" I LOVE class! I love that it's not just going through the moves but also guided thinking. Physically, I think it goes at a good pace and there are always options to take it up a notch or to tone it down, depending on how I'm feeling on the day." Natasha Akib

"Hi Katie-- just wanted to let you know that, as I come into my 39th week of pregnancy, I have been reading the chapter on labour in your book The Yoga of Birth and found it very good and helpful - not preachy and very straightforward." - Tamsim
"I just wanted to send a quick thank you for the Pregnancy training this past weekend. It was a truly wonderful course and I really feel I have such a deeper understanding and new found level of courage in not only pregnancy itself, but pregnancy in yoga. I've been carrying such tremendous fears about my life and pregnancy lately but I feel they have been lifted and I am most certainly more hopeful." - Miya
"I really enjoyed the (Embracing the Moon) workshop. Not only was the information really relevant and easily digestible, it was also fun! Hopefully you already know this, but in my very humble opinion, you really are a wonderful presenter, so grounded and approachable. I did not have a maternal influence in life and the conversation you facilitated is of the kind I imagine I would have had with my grandmothers, aunties, mother and female cousins. I have some great knowledge I can build on and share with my own darling daughter." - Reni
