How do Detox Teas work?

I've been on a low-key detox recently--Yoga + Detoxing tends to go hand in hand. I've been focusing on yoga sequences to facilitate the body's natural detox process and eating seasonal clean food-- no alcohol, processed foods or sugar and to give myself something extra to switch the focus from deprivation central, I'm supplementing my sugar cravings with Amaze Tea Co detox tea. It tastes amazing, much nicer than the intense nettle, dandy-root concoctions I'd been whipping up and I've had some great feedback that my skin in glowing and to my surprise my BMI has dropped considerably. Not that fat-loss was at all a goal, I think of it more as moving towards my healthiest, ideal body.

Anyway, given my love of the teas, I had Keith share some of his knowledge on the how and why of detox teas...

The lowdown on liver cleanse, colon cleanse & detox diets.

Herbal teas are used for detox cleanses, colon cleanses, liver cleanses, metabolism boosters and fast weight loss.

For thousands of years herbalists have used natural herbs for their medicinal properties. Now these herbs are used for modern problems such as: The detoxification of our bodies and fast weight loss.  A detox cleanse of our bodies helps us to purge our bodies of toxins.

Detoxification works in a number of ways: colon cleanse, liver cleanse and antioxidants

Colon Cleanse:

The colon is a vital part of the bodies own detoxification system. Without regular colon cleansing the colon can become backed up with mucoid plaque and fecal matter. Bad eating and drinking makes this worse. When the colon gets backed up the whole body suffers because it’s less efficient at removing toxins.  On top of that the colon won’t be as effective at absorbing micronutrients and vitamins, leading to even worse health. You can do a natural colon cleanse by using a (natural) laxative tea. Detox teas can help to remove the plaque and backed up matter and boost your immunity.

Liver Cleanses & Liver Detox:

The liver is an incredibly important organ. The liver is thought to be responsible for around 500 separate functions (Wikipedia). Notable liver functions are cleaning waste products from the blood, several metabolism processes and glycogen storage – an important energy source. No wonder that when our livers aren’t healthy we feel horrible, have bad health and low energy. But modern life puts a huge strain on this poor organ. This is why it’s important to give your liver a chance to recover and a good liver cleanse. Giving your liver a boost will promote healthy liver function, leading to fewer toxins and waste-products in your blood and more energy.

Just breathing oxygen produces highly reactive free radicals. Stress, processed food, drinking etc. produces even more free radicals.  Free radicals are highly reactive substances that cause damage to your body. This works through a chemical process similar to rusting. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals – the goal of antioxidants in detox tea is to rid your bodies of toxins to prevent damage. This will allow the bodies own natural healing processes to do its job.

As you can imagine doing cleanses and detoxes gives a fast weight loss benefit by removing backed up waste from your system.  Improving the functioning of our bodies own detoxification system leads to better health and can help to boost metabolism. A better functioning body will be better at burning fat for energy and boosting metabolism of fat. This is why detoxes are important to weight loss.

But detoxing is not just about losing weight fast. The benefits of detoxing are thought to include: Reduction in the effects of aging, clearer skin, reduced acne, fewer digestive disorders such as bloating, cramps, diarrhea, constipation and general better health and wellbeing. I like to think of detoxing as giving my body a well-deserved vacation and a service.

Not all detoxes are created equal. Some are low quality, or not organic or missing key ingredients. To find the best detox tea, look for organic and make sure they are not skimping on ingredients.

Below is a list of some herbs used for weight loss and natural detoxes.

Burdock Root:

Contains 3 powerful antioxidants. Burdock is used in detox tea because herbalists have used burdock to increase urine flow, kill germs, reduce fever, and purify their blood.

Nettle Leaf

Used as an herbal remedy for thousands of years. A key constituent of detox teas. Also used as a natural diuretic to promote flushing for healthy weight loss

Dandelion Root

Used for loss of appetite, upset stomach. Dandelion is also used to increase urine production. A very popular natural ingredient used to increase bowel movements for people looking for natural weight loss assistance. Therefore a very important ingredient in detox tea. It is also used as skin toner, blood tonic, and digestive tonic.

Red Clover Flower

Contains isoflavones. Isoflavones are used to protect against hormonal disorders. Used for indigestion, high cholesterol and menstruation. Many people suffering from indigestion and high cholesterol just need to detox to remove toxins from their bodies. Not many detox teas contain this powerful ingredient.

Calendula Flower

Calendula flower is used to prevent muscle spasms, reduce menstrual cramps, and stomach ulcers. People wishing to lose weight by using detox teas sometimes suffer from muscle spasms as the body eliminates toxins.

Liquorice Root

Licorice is used in detox cleanses for various digestive system complaints including stomach ulcers, heartburn, and ongoing inflammation of the lining of the stomach (chronic gastritis). Used in slimming teas, on it’s own or as part of a a cleansing diet.

Lemon Verbena

Lemon verbena is one of the herbs for weight loss because it is used for digestive disorders including indigestion, gas, colic, diarrhea, and constipation. Laxative teas sometimes have a lot of Lemon Verbana for a super colon cleanse effect. Detox teas normally have a lower dosage for a more natural colon cleanse.

Lemon Peel

For flavoring, antioxidant and antibacterial purposes. Particularly useful for people looking to do a liver cleanse because antioxidants metabolize free radicals.

Rhubarb Root

Rhubarb is used primarily for digestive complaints including constipation, diarrhea, heartburn and stomach pain, It is eaten on it’s own or sometimes added to detox teas. This ingredient is often used in natural weight loss supplements. As this is a food it is also good for a cleansing diet.

St. Mary’s Thistle Seed

Contains silymarin which is used to enhance the bioavailability of herbal products. Natural weight loss supplements, weight loss herbs, slimming teas and detox teas use this ingredient to enhance the effectiveness of the other ingredients.

How to detox your body

To detox your body you have a number of options: You can do a detox diet either by giving up bad foods, or going a step further and severely restrict calories. These detoxes can work but sometimes your body needs a little extra help to assist with cleansing the colon, detoxing the liver and removing free radicals.

Many people get better results in less time by taking detoxification supplements. These can be artificial detox pills or you can do a natural detox by using a Detox tea. Slimming teas can also help with your weight loss goals and make the detoxification process more tolerable.

Detox teas work by using a combination of herbs that have been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. The herbs in detox teas help your detox by: colon cleansing , liver cleansing & liver detox and by neutralizing free radicals.

The best detox is organic, natural and results in a sustainable, healthy weight loss.
